A pedestrian stepping into the road or a vehicle making an unusual maneuver can catch any driver off guard, and automated driving systems face similar challenges. ACM has been awarded a second research task under its NHTSA IDIQ contract, working with the National Laboratory of the Rockies and cogniBIT GmbH to explore how surprise can be characterized in driving and how it’s experienced by ADS-equipped vehicles.
How should autonomous vehicles handle emergency vehicles? Not every collision is forceful enough to set off an airbag. ACM has been awarded a research task under its NHTSA IDIQ contract, working with Michigan Tech’s APS LABS to assess how automated driving systems detect low-energy impacts involving pedestrians and cyclists, low-speed collisions, and towed trailers.
Two working testbeds, one AC and one DC, will show how the pieces of vehicle-to-grid operate together across the full utility-to-vehicle chain.
